Speak Truth to Power

The program for students

Inspired by Kerry Kennedy’s book and by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Speak Truth to Power (STTP) is a human rights education program that combines storytelling and interactive learning to give the next generation the concrete knowledge they will need to create change and advance human rights.

The program was developed by the RFK Human Rights Foundation in the year 2000, drawing on the book of the same name written by Kerry Kennedy, president of the Foundation, which presents 50 interviews conducted over the years with various defenders of human rights and social justice in more than 40 countries.

Through these interviews, the content of the different human rights is taught, with lessons covering topics such as the right to life, freedom of thought and expression, the prohibition of torture, political participation, freedom of movement, asylum and refuge, and the right to education, among many others.

The STTP program content is designed and adapted to be taught to primary, secondary, high school, and university students.

Teach Truth to Power

The training for educators

The Teach Truth to Power (TTTP) program consists of a series of courses for educators, giving them the tools they need to deliver the Speak Truth to Power program to an academic audience. It is training that is theoretical as well as methodological and practical.

Its aim is to provide a thematic and methodological analysis of education as a tool for freedom, and of teaching and learning methods so that this freedom can be implemented as a right for all.

The program covers, among others, the following topics:

  • The history of Speak Truth to Power (STTP) and its pedagogical foundations.
  • An introduction to human rights through the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
  • Human rights training: definition and methodologies.
  • STTP in the classroom: curriculum and planning.
  • Case studies, presentations, and other participatory activities.
  • Opportunities and challenges through group discussions.
