A play by Ariel Dorfman

Speak Truth to Power on stage

Voices from the Darkness, written by the Chilean playwright Ariel Dorfman, is a key component of the Speak Truth to Power program. It is based on Kerry Kennedy’s book of the same name, featuring the interviews she conducted with human rights defenders around the world.

It premiered at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., in the year 2000. Through the Robert F. Kennedy Foundation Spain, it opened in Spain in 2016 to an enormous reception, with Kerry Kennedy and María Díaz de la Cebosa present at the Madrid premiere.

An edition during the pandemic

The second edition of the play in our country took place in the midst of the global pandemic, staged in an online format.

It was an incredible experience, with some technical difficulties but great results for the students who took part. In such difficult times, giving shape to the struggle for human rights through its most representative defenders took on special meaning.

Voices against violence

The most recent performance, on September 29, 2021, brought together the voices of human rights defenders from our country: Irene Villa, an example of resilience and reconciliation; Jon Viar, film author and director; and Padre Ángel, founder of "Mensajeros por la Paz," joined their voices in a plea against violence.

The event featured students from CIS University, closely linked to the Foundation, and was widely covered by the leading national media.
